Title: Can you identify this icon/figure??
Post by: Scot on October 11, 2010, 01:38:00 AM

I received a clock from my grandmother for my 21st birthday, it is Scottish and is a small mantle clock with a round face. What I am interested in is the figure on the top. It appears to be brass, and is a large rooster standing on top of a pile of books and a python? My grandmother informed me that this figure had some kind of significance, which she could not remember, and i'm very interested if anyone can enlighten me on what this is! Sorry I do not have a picture as the clock is not with me at the moment, and I cannot find anything on the internet that even slightly resembles it.

Please help!!   :)

Now it's drivin' me crazy! I hope someone here can help you. It's a little hard without a pic. If it is with someone else, can they possibly snap a pic and send it to you? This pottery is the only thing I can find but it gives no info and has no books. What's the significance of a rattlesnake and a rooster? On books? Hmmm.....

I'm thinking it may be astrological? Chinese astrology has a rooster and a snake but your clock isn't chinese. Hmm. Some kind of fight? Battle between the two? I give. Hope someone else enlightens us both!

If you scroll in on the center of this pic, you'll see a snake and a rooster. Again, chinese. Probably not related but who knows.

Also, these say that the snake is intelligent and the rooster has a quick witted mind. On top of books...sounds like some sort of intelligence thing lol :P

A pic would be great. Now I'm curious. :) My chinese stuff doesn't really make any sense. Sometimes we all throw stuff out there to get the gears going in our heads, then ideas spill out. Are you positive it's Scottish? Might help with the sybolism from certain parts of the world. Good luck!

Hi,

It could be a French clock, a cockerel is quite common on French pieces .. try this link, but you'll have to scroll quite a way down!

Chanticleer calls out awakening all to read while the stealthful snake slithers up to forever quiet the vociferous combed figure.

Where is the pic?  "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Agree...can you let us know what it says on the face of the clock (other than the time and numerals) and any other written information. Thanks!

It says CHA (then an s with a dot below it) FRODS. 115 NEW BOND STREET LONDON 20892.

This is on the face of the clock. I cannot find any other marks on it anywhere. I was speaking to someone earlier that told me the above name and address would correspond to only the working parts of the clock, and not the rest of it (which is what im interested in).

pics are not great but i would suspect a marriage,
the rooster & the clock did not start life together it looks very disproportional. The clock is quality sold through a top London retailer so the movement will be signed.
If the Rooster is quality it also should have some markings on it

The clock seems to be by Charles Frodsham, and I think they may have been at that address quite some time ago. although the photos maybe don't do it justice. I agree about the marriage...The Cockerel looks just too disproportionate and not in keeping with the style.

Happy hunting!

Hi Again,

I think that I was right about it being Charles Frodsham, I found the following Auction result from Bonhams giving that address.. Don't get too excited as Marine Chronometers can fetch hefty prices, but Frodsham is a good name, and your piece may be an early one. A better photo or two might help, might even help determine whether it is a marriage or not.

With a good pic, or even the serial number that you quote I'm sure that they'll be able to fill you in.
