Title: hoosier cabinet
Post by: marcylove on October 28, 2010, 05:32:18 PM
Here's my fil's hoosier.  I'm trying to price it out.  We're thinking at least $500...  Anyone know anything about oil lamps too?

$500 looks to be about average for what people are asking for them now. Here's a whole list of Hoosiers currently up on Craigslist in the SF Bay Area for comparison.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind keeping it but it doesn't really go with the rest of our decor.  He has a roll top desk too that I want, I ALWAYS wanted one, but it wouldn't hold all my computer equipment... I just don't want my house starting to look like a garage sale...even though he has some really cool stuff.

That is the part I had to come to realization as well.  There are so many things that I TRULY like....but....whic h ones are the ones that I want to have in my home.  Sometimes you just have to learn to appreciate the beauty/history of items and relish in the moments you see them without having to own them.

What I do is pick a theme for each room or build a theme around one antique piece in the room. My bedroom and livingroom have Chinese antiques, Victorian in the dining room, Victorian with bold black/white/red in the bathroom, and in the kitchen, it's all cobalt blue w/white, with rustic "kitcheny things" that match the Hoosier. Each them ends at the doorway and I don't mix items from one room with another. That way I get to endulge in a lot of different things I like and each room has a different feel to it.

We have a single theme throughout ... it's called 'work-in-progress'   ;)

Nice one KC  ;D

You must also be psychic ... I was at my sister's and BIL's today sorting out the electrics in their bathroom... I always give a sigh of relief if I manage to complete a job like that without any major injuries!!!

tales, I wish I had thought to take out my camera while I was at My Favourite Thrift Shop in Vancouver a couple of weeks ago. There was a Chinese cabinet......don't know what kind you would call it, just sitting there begging for a home. Seemed all it needed was a good polish. It was a good 5 1/2 ft tall and likely 4 ft wide. A myriad of doors, all with brass trim and hinges. I didn't even dare ask the price because generally their prices are 'grab and run' tempting. You would have fallen in love in 5 seconds and hauled it south with you.

This is the closest to what it looked like that I've found.....except the one I saw had several more smaller size individual doors. Just killed me to walk out the door.  :'(

Nice! There are a lot of modern made Korean ones though that are similar to this style. So you kind of have to watch out that it's actually old and look at the wear marks in the drawer openings (the drawers are on runners that leave grooves at the lip of the opening) and if the doors on the cabinets are made with single pieces of wood (modern) and if there are signs of wear from the doors swinging and things rolling around inside the drawers. If it was in a thrift store I would look really carefully for signs of age. I'm finding that a lot of the thrift stores here have started selling anything antique through their online shops. I have only one thrift store I go to anymore and it's the only one I've been to in a long while that regularly carries antiques/collectables.
