Title: Couch...
Post by: hosman321 on January 07, 2011, 08:51:07 PM
Didn't want to keep hijacking tales' thread, so I figured I'd start my own for this sofa.
Just curious how old ya'll think it is. I was thinking the 20's-ish. I hope it's not newer than that. When I first put it on hold I thought it was older, but those metal wheels don't look as old as I thought. I will take a picture of one soon. After hauling that monster inside, I just want to sit for a minute. Of course, I never measure anything. It is 10" too long for the space I had in mind. So, I had rip apart the antiques room so it has a temporary home in there. Excuse the messy carpet after the tornado in there. ;)

Oooh!! Love it! It looks so springy and comfy! The perfect place to curl up with an old book on a rainy day!

It is super springy and super thick! I just noticed the water stain on the right. Can't see it in person but my camera brings it out. Needs a bit of cleaning, I suppose.

I love those springy Victorian couches! Are you sure that's a waterstain and not just a shadow from where the springs/padding is?

Yeah, it's a water stain. When I shine light on it I can see it. I may clean it a bit with warm water.

Or a little spray rug and upholstery cleaner. Does it match your place or are you going to reupholster?

I think I'll leave it. I like the dark fabric. Even the mister said he likes it because it's fancy yet still somewhat masculine. Not all flowery or pink or loud and obnoxious. Although I do love dark red and gold....

It looks like a nice, tasteful fabric. If it matches and Hubby likes it, you're good to go!

I was figuring 1920 - 1930.

Nice looking piece you have there!

Whatever the age its very cool and stylish.Looks so inviting and a pleasure to see this kind of furniture.Seems like its in pretty nice shape too.If it were mine it would be lights out and listening to early broadcast of The Shadow.I'm jealous.

You have a lovely sofa there Hosman. Most importantly you both like it and it's comfy!

I'm no expert on casters, but they look quite old from your photo. I've been crawling around the house on my knees looking at ours. We have a late Victorian/early Edwardian barley-twist cottage suite, they have pierced casters, but condition looks the same as your photo. We also have a Victorian Iron & Brass bed, solid casters, again very similar to yours (a good job that I did look as I just noticed that one was damaged!).

It looks in lovely condition, and I'd say that it's certainly no later than 20s - 30s ... but others may have a more informed opinion.

Nice find!

Yes, those are cast iron casters with metal wheels and should date pre-1920 or 30. I'm not sure when they quit with the "casting" of the iron wheel bracket and started "stamping" them out of sheet steel. But whenever it was it would have been a tremendous cost savings.

OOPs, forgot, me thinks that looks more like a daybed than it does a couch.

Thanks for the input guys! The wheels do look like cast iron and brass. I'd be pretty happy if it were late Victorian, that's what I was hoping for. I have been looking for a site that explains antique casters better but I think I'm going to have to hit up the library to look for a book. Haven't done that in a very long time!

I agree with ya Dean, it is very inviting. I feel like I need to go light a candle in there and lay down with a book. This kind of furniture just takes me back in time for a moment.

Oh, and is the veneer mahogany? I just realized it matches my old ogee clock. ;)

Well, originally it was a rich red fabric. My favorite color. Eventually I think I will get it reupholstered. It was done very poorly and all the seams show on the front and the seat and they aren't even straight seams. No big deal though, it's fine for now. I'll just clean it. Besides, I'm not moving that thing again any time soon!

cogar made the remark that it appears to be a daybed and after second glance it could be.

What is the depth of the seat? (front to back)

The seat itself is 64"L x 18"W x 10"H. 18 inches seems really skinny for a place to nap but I suppose it's possible.

OK, .... OK, ...... it's a ....... Fainting Couch.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hosman, I was just going by the uneven heights of the arms, and when I see that I call it a day bed. If it has 2 even height arms I call it a couch. And if it only has 1 arm I call it a Fainting Couch or chaise lounge.

Anyway, it don't matter, it's whatever you want to call it.

I think the arms are the same height.  The angle of the photo gives the illusion of the arms being uneven.

Looks like a couch, sits like a couch, arms like a couch, must be a couch.

Oh, oops. Yeah, it's just the angle. The arms are the same height. :)
I originally wanted a chaise but never found one that caught my eye. Now, I find this one and kick myself in the butt. I love cast iron!

I like your couch a whole lot better than the cast iron daybed. I like cast iron too, but that just looks like a shin-knocker to me.

Yeah, me too. And I wouldn't have paid $400 for the iron one.

Too bad these are so far away, they'd match the couch pretty good. Although all 3 would need reupholstering. I'd never give up something in my family for that long!

Oh MY!!!!  If they were closer we might get into a bidding war.  They are fabulous and to have the history to boot.  I am shocked no one has snatched them up...

Sigh...  I have a thing for old chairs!!

Love those chairs. It amazes me that people will put family items on Ebay or Craigslist. Remember that 1840's rocker with the antimacassar? It was bothering me so much that I emailed the guy and encouraged him to keep it in his family. Told him what a real treasure he had and that I hoped he might consider gifting it to a female niece or cousin interested in family history. I never heard back from him, but the rocker never went up on craigslist again, so I hope it found a good home.

One thing it does point out is how important it is to give careful consideration to who should inherit family things.

Hosman, this couch is so awesome, can't wait to see what you do with it!

I have a thing for chairs, too! I have had to pass up so many of them because I just can't take them all home. I have 1 that I love so I'll just be happy with it. I still don't know what to do with the sofa. I'm completely redoing the bedroom next week. Sold all of our old (3 year old) furniture to my mom and are getting new. Going to attempt to do a red, white and blue (antique) theme to match the 1770's pelmet/textile. I have so many red, white and blue antiques so it should be easy to decorate. Going to use that old Globe file cabinet as a tv stand and all the drawers for movies. Wish I could rip out the hideous green carpet and put something different but that will have to wait until later.

I want to put this couch in there but I don't think there will be enough room for it. And I would want to reupholster it to match. I'm dying to know if the red fabric under the black fabric is in decent shape. It's the perfect color, from what I can see. Probably in bad shape though. Or not all there.  :-\
