Are there markings anywhere ?? What is the size ? Look on the bottom of the interior pan as well !!
-
Hi
What size is it? And I'm not sure what I'm seeing, but does the lid swivel?
-
It has no mark or inscription somewhere.
The cover turns.
I can assume it is a religious object, but I can not tell.
Here are more pictures with details.

A salt cellar maybe?
-
My first thought was an incense burner, but then again, I'd have thought that it would have had a pierced top???
-
Butter Pate, Silverplate, Late 1800's early 1900's
-
It looks brass. And the face on it looks European !! Could be a salt container as salt was once very valuable !! Or some other spice ?? I don`t think its a religious object !!
-
Butter or Cheese Pate or Dish, These was used in the late and early Century, Usually has a Glass insert. If you look at ebay under silverplate Butter Dish you will see several of the round Covered ones.
-
The top looks like it could be silver because of the stamped design. Not usually seen with silver plate. The rest does appear to be silver plate. I would look this over with a loupe very closely for hallmarks as they could be tiny and overlooked with the naked eye.
-
Wayward is right, it is rare to find a Silverplate item that does not have a mark, Modern silverplate sometimes has no marks. But much pride in silverplate items and 95% will have some sort of marks. Look on the back side of the feet, many times I have found them here.

Butter dish!!!! The top design looks almost egyptian revival...but the Butter God isn't that style!
-
look for markings on three legs, but found none.
some details of the engraving on the top

As they say in the Trade... Looks like someone's taken a Brillo Pad to it!
Still an interesting piece.
-
There just is no good substitute for silver polish and elbow grease.
-
I agree it's a butter dish and I bet if you used a little Wrights Silver Polish on it it would be beautiful! Here's a similar butter dish on Worthpoint.

At first I thought this was a spoon warmer, but those generally have a trap door type of panel in the cover.
