Title: Paul Drury Etching?

Well, I bought this etching from an Auction back in the late 80s. There was a box of about six pictures, in all:  a couple of 19th c water colours and two etchings. I paid £30 ($45) at the time for all six. The two etchings were hanging for a couple of years, then ended up being put away as we didn't really like it much, and to be honest, I never really took much notice of them, until now. One etching doesn't seem to be signed at all, but this one is actually signed and dated in pencil on work. Now, I've discovered that the piece is called 'On Box Hill', but after the signature it seems to say 'fie stimp' ... but I could be wrong.
What are your thoughts? I have found a few of his pieces up for sale and they seem to be fetching silly money, but I can't seem to find anything for this one... it could be quite a common one.
It's certainly one that I might just take down to the Auction House to see whether it's worth £100 - £200, and if so ... sell it and buy something we like! (forever the optimist!)

Well, if you do not like it and it has been hiding for a few years, I would sell and use silly money for something that I might enjoy.

Mario, I found another of the same but it is stated to be a 'working proof'......note after his signature what appears to be 'Trial prf(?)

Thanks for that. I had found the first, but not the second, so there are some around then ....

Here's a close up, but I still can't make it out!   ??? ??? ???

Looks like it's suffering from a bit of foxing  :(  No mega bucks then!

I am not sure what fec means yet but I believe after that it means 24th impression.

Latin notations for 'he made', follows the artist's name on a painting or sculpture, or on an original print to distinguish the artist from the engraver, printmaker and/or publisher.

If it is a very valuable etching, I think foxing can be fixed.

As we all know, the retailers asking price, and the price that can be realised at Auction, are often miles apart.

I e-mailed pics and descriptions to three Auction Houses and one has got back to me surprisingly quickly:

To be honest, even if that is the best it realizes then I'll still be a happy bunny, considering how little I paid for it... and don't really like it.

I wonder if our Mr Hanson watches this forum? ... that's the same figure I thought of in my first post!  ;D

Is Mr. Hanson's price his estimate of what it would bring retail, at auction, or ? The gallery price of $1450 is quite far off from $160-320. I would expect half of the gallery price and then less commission or closer to $500 but then I am not in the etching market. Does the foxing drop it down to $160+?  Just wondering.

Hi Wayward,

This is his Auction estimate, but he may be a wee bit off, although he's probably got access to all the Auction Hammer Prices. However, he will be thinking what it might fetch at his Auction House, despite being hooked up to the internet. The other two Auction Houses I've contacted have specialist Fine Art Auctions, and I have a feeling they might come up with a slightly higher estimate.

I'll let you know what replies I get ... whatever .... I'll still be content  ;)

I'll try sending pics of the other one as well, if it is by someone famous then I'm sure they'll recognise the style ... but without a signature  :(
