Title: I finally got to buy something fun. Geeze.
Post by: hosman321 on August 07, 2011, 08:28:02 PM
We've been super tight on money lately with us both being unemployed but I finally got to buy something fun. I have been wanting a pair of these scissors for a long time, for no particular reason other than I love them. I got these ones because they have a maker's mark. Or, at least a partial one. Does anybody know of a site where I can look it up? I can see an "sa" at the beginning, a "co" (company?) at the bottom left and a star to the right. Of course, I don't have them in hand. But I am the most impatient person in the world. :) Thanks for any advice! I will go to the library if need be, but I like to have a book name so I can see if the library has it before I make the trip. The book they show doesn't appear to talk about maker's marks.

OMG, hosman, I can barely see the marks...good luck. I think you may luck out if the blacksmith was well known and some of his other wares were published.

I know wayward, it really will be a project to figure it out. But I have seen people list books that have makers marks for iron items of that period, I just can't find them again! I will probably be up all night, I would just really like to know if they are 18th or 19th century.

I wonder if this book would have something, but my library system doesn't have it...

The Bellevue Library (King County) has that book...  Can you get an inter-library loan from King County?  If not, I'm happy to get it and look for you.  Altho..... if I don't find it you will always wonder if I missed it!!  LOL  ;)

Very cool. I have some antique sewing scissors and I use them all the time. Love 'em!

That would be great oceans! No rush though, just whenever you think of it. I doubt that it will have maker's marks in there anyways but it couldn't hurt to look. The same seller has another pair with a clearer (different) mark than mine but too late for that now. ;)
Oh, and I don't know about an inter-library thing, never tried.

This book looks awesome. But I need to find it WAY cheaper. The cheapest on abebooks is $225. :o Cheapest on ebay is $94.

I got these in the mail today. I must say, they are pretty darn cool. I really love them. Upon closer inspection, the mark that looks like a star actually looks like a big bird, maybe a rooster. Then again, maybe all the pitting is causing me to see things. ;)
I'll take pics today to show the mark, and head off to see if there is anything about a rooster maker's mark online.

Ok, I know the pics are terrible but it's as good as it gets for now. In person I can tell that it is definitely a chicken or rooster. The same stamp is on both blades. On one blade I can read "CO" inside a circle, at the right of the circle. On the other blade I can read "SM" or "SA" at the beginning. The rest is worn away. The circle is under the chicken's feet. Of course, nothing to really go off of. But there's got to be a book or website that has known maker's marks. At least I have a partial mark! I'd love to know who made these, when and where.

It's online as an E-book. It looks to be the whole book, not just a preview:

Hmm... looks like most of it is there and they leave a few choice pages out in between. Sorry, I thought it was the whole thing.

That's ok, I still appreciate it very much! Preview goes up to page 42 and there are 200 something pages. I would love to see the thumb latch section because I'm gettin' all into those now. But it's still great for reference. :)

I drove by the library this weekend but...  My library card was not in my wallet!!  Arrrhh...

I did find the book tho so I took pics of the scissor section.  Not a lot of pages so I'm not sure if it will help or not.  I also found 1 other book with some marks (no pics or text) and took pics of that as well. I'll post the marks but...... Wayward, if it's not OK, let me know and I'll delete..

I have several other pages of text and pics Hosman so PM your email and I will send.  I had to change my email and no longer have your addy.

Here is a set of pics that closely resemble your handle style.  Book says it is Chinese which I thought was interesting. No other makers in the book had this style of handle.

Here are the makers marks from Zalkins Handbook of Thimbles and Sewing Implements: A Complete Collector's Guide With Current Prices by Estelle Zalkin

This was all the marks for scissors...

I don't think these marks are unique to scissors but they were the only marks in the book.

There is only a brief mention of iron scissors in this article on antique scissors identification, but I thought you still might find it interesting. http://elegantarts.com/Newsletter1.pdf (http://elegantarts.com/Newsletter1.pdf)

Ladies, thank you for your replies! I don't know how I never saw them, sorry about the late reply. I actually accidentally saw them because I was looking for that partial book on google to look through. I bought 2 pairs of 18th century shutters and thought it might have some good info on the hardware. I didn't spot my specific mark but still great references, thank you again for taking the time oceans and for your research tales! :)

those are awesome!! i love old iron. and I know for a fact those are VERY hard to forge properly so the maker must have been skilled, and only professionals signed there work

I'm just curious. What are the chances of the same seller having a nearly identical item that was made by the same blacksmith (or company) over 200 years ago? This is the same maker's mark as mine, being sold by the same seller. Are they selling reproductions? Over the past several months, I have wondered why they deal mainly with iron items. Should I email them? Can anyone make out the name on the mark?

The name on the new ebay scissors looks like JUAN OCAMPO. But I can't make out the bottom word. Mine do not look like they have JUAN or OCAMPO on them but it is the same rooster and same orientation of the circle under the rooster. Maybe the same company mark with different makers? I just want to know if I was sold a repro or an actual old pair.

Ohh, on the other side of the new ebay scissors, it says "SANTIAGO OCAMPO" and CORONADA" or "CORONADO." Mine also have this same mark, now that I look. Now we have two names, can we figure out who this is/was?
