Title: Hollinshead & Griffiths footed bowl/dish.
Post by: snowflake on October 01, 2011, 11:56:33 AM
I should have put this in my Rest in Pieces thread but there are still things I want to know about it.
First off...You know you are are newbie when...I looked it up assuming "Royal Chelsea Pottery" was the company and H&G was the artist.   :-[

Once I figured out that it was a Hollinshead and Griffiths, I thought the search would be easy. Not so much! I did find one vase or teacup with the identical mark. Other than that, I have been having a hard time coming up with it anywhere. From what I have read it would be dated between 1890 and 1910.

This piece is in horrible condition. Still, I would like to know what it might have been worth. And why are there so few "Royal Chelsea" pieces out there? Did they suffer the same fate as this piece but got thrown into the trash? Or am I just not searching the right words. Haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Still have to get that putty to fix all the broken/cracked items in this house. I wonder too, why I am keeping them! But they are still so pretty.  :(

Did a little bit of searching...didn't come up with much at all  :(  You're right, there's really not a lot out there.  I wouldn't trash it, though!  It's still purdy, I'm sure someone would still buy it, probably not for much but better than trashing it!

LOL! Maybe it will end up in my lawn sale! But I just don't think I could put a broken piece out. I forgot to add the size: 9 inches in diameter  and 3 1/2 inches in height.

You could put it on eBay with a low starting price.  I've sold old broken china before, there are always people out there who will still want it.

Thanks, Wendy. That was my first search. I came up with several Chelsea items too. Problem was, they weren't by the same company. A few were, a few even had the exact mark. Still couldn't find anything remotely like mine. Not giving up though!

If it was you (anyone here) would you pitch it or keep it?

I always ask this when confronted with that decision." Are they making anymore of them?" ( I HATE throwing away anything old!!)

That my problem, JoshandLila! But I have to get rid of things. My Mom moved in with her stuff, and things she was left recently when my Gran passes. I lost two rooms but also have to contend with the contents she brought. There is just no room. If I keep everything boxed up, it's doing no good to me or it! I am glad that Mom is here, just wish I had the room to keep everything. Maybe it's time to buy a shed. LOL! Oh no, this is just starting to sound like hoarding.  ::)

What is the brown stuff on the back ??  Old glue ??  If you were close to me I could probably fix those cracks so it would be in usable condition !! Many crack lines I can make almost invisible !!

Greenacres, that is exactly what my Mom would do. She makes garden decorations out bits and pieces like that. When she moved in, I had a small platter on the wall (I should have moved it) and it fell off and smashed. I had to walk out because I was just heartbroken. It wasn't pretty but it was very old. She promised to "make" me something out of it.

That is old glue. This was a rough and tumble family. They used this stuff all the time like it was your everyday dish sets. If it broke, oh well. Just glue it back. That's the way they were. If you only knew what I threw out or still have all busted up, you'd cry! I see that glue in my sleep. LOL! You're in the States Mart?
I do have a large Doulton vase I'd love to have fixed. It breaks my heart to look at it.

Yes,, I am in Texas !!! Getting the old glue off would be the hard part and I am not sure if I could get those cracks covered enough since it has turned brown !!  If you were close I would sure try though !! Post a pic of that vase and let me look !! Guess I could break a cheapie piece and show you a before and after !! I have sort of developed my own little method but not to sell them, more for family pieces that you just want to look better so you dont have to trash them !!

Hubby has family that moved to Texas last year. They are not very close, so I have no idea where. I was talking to her and she loves it, said living there just for the BBQed steak on a bun was worth the move! LOL!

I'll go take some pictures of the vase. It's really bad. I love it so much though. Never been able to find it on-line.

Will post it in a few...

Here goes:

It is heavy. Stands just under a foot and a half high and 10 inches across.
This one hurts!   :'(

I was told my father-in-law did it when he was young. He was blamed for everything. So who knows. But isn't it sad?

Sur is a gorgeous vase to have that much damage !! I could make it a lot better and certainly good enough to use,  if I can get the old glue off the surface !! Problem would be that shipping cost would be prohibitive from Canada to Texas then getting it from Texas back to you !! As large as that vase is one way would be about $30. or more !! Reason I know that is I just looked at a set of cookware in Canada and thats what the shipping was on it one way !!

Thanks, mart. I love it. I still have it out on the back of a "memory" table dedicated to those who have passed on in our families. The glue is so old, I can just take my fingernail and scratch it off. Just been too afraid to do it in case it falls apart! I know, the cost to mail things here in Canada is nuts! In most cases it is cheaper for me to mail to the States than it is inside of Canada. It cost me a small fortune to mail a painting out west to be cleaned and appraised! Maybe one day I'll visit the relatives in Texas!   ;)

If the glue comes off that easy it wouldn`t be too hard to do, just time consuming !!  If you do visit the Texas relatives,, bring the vase !! I would be happy to do it for you !! I have a Shawnee piece that hubby`s mother had that was broken and glued back with the same glue as your vase I think !! I have been meaning to repair that old crack and have taken some "before" pics !! When I get a day to piddle I will do the work on it and put before and after pics in the projects topic !!

I'd love to see it when you get around to it!

mart, I'm interested in seeing how it works. My son brought me a bowl back from Chech when he was 16. He's now 32, lol He broke the bowl in his luggage. I glued it and put it away. I'm so sentimental. If I could repair it properly I could take it out. Could you place it under projects? I would love to know. Thanks
