O.k. I need a bit of help on what are these Pots Called and possible information on use. I picked this up at the Auction Last Weekend, it was titled as a Hondes Pot, but when looking that up all I get is Honda stuff. Would like to know a name for this kind of Pot. It is made of a Stoneware or Natual Clay material, this one is 7" Long Handle to Handle, Stands 5" Tall. Also what is the purpose of the rings, is it to hand over a fire?

From what I gather the Honde are a tribe. I am trying to find out where. Somewhere near Zimbabwe? Have to check. There is a pot with a ring here but no info. You'll have to scroll about 1/3 down page. Still looking...

Kinda looks terra cotta mat'l , from here ....
Perhaps an oil storage jar , or , in the event there are 'lid' marks on the jug , maybe an oil lamp (just guessing) ?

Look up honde gorge !! Might find something about the people of the area !! Closest I found was a beer pot !!
-
Me too! but they are large pots. This is going to bug me all night!

They are pots to cook. Ironlord, I think your right about the rings. For some reason this Tarzan movie keeps coming to my mind. Of course it took place in Africa, lol They boiled this man in oil. They were huge version of your small pot. I know that sounds funny, lol I read an atricle that said even sweets were made in them.

Yea I still coming up short on the name of them, if there is a name other then pot with rings ;D. Thanks for all the looks guess I will just have to post it as pot with no name, or Oil pot for boiling a man :o

Try "all purpose cooking pot" but it sure wouldn`t hold much !! Maybe they have tea there ???
-
Were rings placed on pots to hold/hang it over a fire?
-
Not saying it is yours, no rings but the coloring seems similar. My eyes are not that great anymore:

Yea I sure this is not Pre Columbian for sure, and as for it being used for Cooking Looking inside I would say this is more Decorative then useful. Most likely a tourist sort of item from somewhere. I just have seen this style of Pot from time to time and thought they would have some name to help me tag the item. I have put this item on the back burner per say for now and will get back to it later, Hopefully I can find the name.

I wonder why it is so hard to find? It's just going to bug me until we find out. :(

Although your piece looks too "chunky" to be from Japan, I found "honde" in Japanese ceramics
"Different types of Karatsu ware have been appreciated by numerous tea masters. To be found among the major works of Karatsu ceramics are, Oku-Korai following the Korai tea bowls, Seto-Karatsu of honde and kawakujirade, Chosen-Karatsu coated with straw ash glaze (warabaiyu) and iron glaze (tetsuameyu), E-Garatsu depicted with iron or copper glaze and coated with translucent glaze, and Madara-Karatsu having blue spots of straw ash glaze. Karatsu ware is characterized by the paddling technique (tatakizukuri) in which strings of clay are stacked on a wheel and the outside is paddled with a wooden paddle into shape with the inside supported by battens. This is said to have been handed down from Korea."

and
"Satsuma-Yaki is a faience of several varie ties and localities as well as periods; the °Go honde° Yoshiro-stamped product alone is of eight styles (according to color and appear ance of glaze), and the Kumagawa finely crackled brown paste, buff-glazed ware is an other held in great esteem by Japanese con noisseurs; it originated the ware that later be came world famous."
