Title: Fenton? Purple Iridescent Ruffle Bowl
Post by: GreenhornGirl on October 17, 2011, 07:38:32 PM
This bowl is unmarked.  The inside only is flashed or coated with iridescent that has crazing or wear scratches to it.

It is 8.5" diameter and 2.75" deep.  Has a dots design.  The body looks similar to this Fenton bowl:  http://www.tias.com/7345/PictPage/1923002659.html

Still looking for a maker and year(s) of production if anyone recognizes this piece.  Thanks!

I know Fenton had their "Coin Dot" pattern...but you would have to check as to whether or not the "dots" were plain or stippled (I can't remember).

Thanks!  I checked Warman's and Fenton definitely had clear, non-stippled Coin Dot patterns.  I'm pretty sure that this is a Fenton, but I'm still working on trying to date it and get a color name or any other info.  It may be amethyst...still looking into it.

This might be called "Feather Stitch". This is probably the golden color. Circa 1911

Thanks, greenacres!  You are very helpful this early morning, my dear!  :)  I didn't consider that this could be Golden...I was looking for purple, amethyst, violet, etc, because when you hold it up to the light the color looks like grape jelly.  But the color can look different in different lighting on these types of pieces, so...thank you!

No problem. They came in Golden, Green and Royal Blue. Nice fine!

GG you and Rauville are correct this is Fenton coin dot.  For the most part coin dot was made with stippled dots but approx. 1909 a variant to this pattern was made with plain dots. This was discovered in a 1909 Butler Brothers ad.

Correct, This can be Coin dot, but the catalogue explained that they are both very similar. But, the name of the bowl was Feather Stitch and it looked very similar.

Thank you ladies, my fellow Fenton & glass lovers!  :)

Wendy, what is your opinion on the color?

Oh, I think I found it!  Here is a 1909 Butler Brothers ad showing the bowl called Venetian Art Iridescent Wine Ruby Glass footed salad dish.

Greenacres, the feather stitch bowls look really similar, you are right about that...I haven't been able to find any non-stippled dot ones though.

I just remembered; Westmoreland had a pattern named "Pearly Dots" that was also very similar.

Thanks, Rauville!  I'm about positive now that this is a Fenton, but that does help as I see a lot of people are mistaking it for Westmoreland's Pearly Dots.  Thank you.
