Title: What is this?
Post by: fptwist on October 30, 2011, 03:24:39 PM
Some sort of pottery jug, 8" tall x 2 3/4" wide, has the name P. J. Eckert pressed into the pottery.  Any info would be appreciated.  Can't seem to find any direction to go in with this. Junk perhaps?

Looks like an early stoneware ginger beer / ale bottle. You might try looking for the name listed under breweries.

Not much time to look tonight !! Not a lot on this guy,,all I found tonight was that he owned a brewery/tavern in Elizabeth, NJ  from 1878 to 1884 when it closed !! Its a nice stoneware bottle and certainly not junk !!  Could be fairly rare but even then value would depend on who wants it !! I will look more tomorrow !!

I have a lot of antique bottles. One place I would go is The Antique Bottle Forum. I do have books, but somestime I'm not totally accurate, so someone will back me up either way.

Found what I think is it! George Kepnwein, Washington, DC, 1885-1875, 7-5/8", $100.-150. It's considered a crock in my book. I'll scan a picture.

As I said I'm not positive. I don't think they are the same name, but do think yours looks like this?

Thanks Greenacres, sure does look a lot like what I have.  Hard to tell exactly, the neck on my bottle seems a bit more stubby but it is very close. Certainly the same time period.  Appreciate your help.

I'll keep checking and see if there's anything else I come up with.

There can be  several different styles of these stoneware bottles with only minor differences !! All are about the same time period !!

Well I'm game, I will reach out to facebook P.J. Eckert.  Thanks for all the info.  I looked as well based on the research you did and I came up with what you found.  Since I am in New England this bottle is most likely from the Eckhert Brewery.  I did find another Eckert at a later date, Caroline that had a tavern in Camden from 1895-1896.  Fun stuff.

I can't believe it. If you remember me saying I bought books from the historic society from the Schuylkill River Valley. The Eckert Family is listed. This was a big bottling area. The family could have moved and started the brewery. When George Washinton imposed new laws to register bottles this became a hostile time. The breweries up North wanted to create a rebellion. They were going to overturn the "Constitution". Thus, there was the "Whiskey Rebellion". The family could have moved north. Let me look and see.

Neither Eckert Family is connected to the brewery, but I found it interesting that one was a member of I.O.O.F.
