Title: Value
Post by: daniel on November 18, 2011, 05:19:49 PM
Hello again! I have some more questions about a couple things I'm considering to bid on. I am new to this, so therefore need some support:) The first thing I am considering entering the bid is a music box from the 1800's, from Geneva. Item number two is a Chinese vase from 17/1800's. So my question is what kind of bids I should add me on these items.Sending with images of the objects.
Thanks for your reply:)

Hi Daniel...Welcome!!

Since you don't own these items, I'm assuming you can't get more pics?  It would really be helpful to see the underneath and very close up (esp of the vase). I am no expert (not even a novice) but when I hear old and Asian my mind immediately goes to repro. Meaning prove it's not cuz I'm assuming guilt before innocence.

Second, what kind of auction is this. Ebay vrs a local auction house vrs Christies is a big deal IMO. In my very limited experience, a local auction house will do what they can to verify a 18/19th century claim, Christies would be more reliable and eBay well, buyer beware LOL!!

Any more info? Do these come with a verifiable provenance?

I am with Oceans on these pieces !!  Best advice I can give is to get something in writing from the auction co. !! And find out if they stand behind the items they sell !!  If you can`t get a guarrantee of authenticity, I would not bid on them !!  Just too many repro`s on the market !!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. This is an auction taking place in Sweden. There are artifacts from the estate and etc. I only have a picture showing the underside of the vase. Hope it can help:)

About the best I can do is to say that the vase could possibly be 1800`s but I wouldn`t go farther back than that without close up pics !!  These do not enlarge so anything I said would be a guess !!  Just don`t pay a lot for them !!

Is the bottom glazed? Maybe others would know if that is normal on a 200yo piece

In regard to the music box: Value depends on cylinder size, how many tunes, comb condition, case condition, etc. I would guess somewhere between $600 to $1200 would be considered a fair price to pay.

Hard to tell but looks like the bottom is glazed but foot is not !!  Foot does show some age but hard to tell how much !!
