Antique Ornate Brass & Glass Document Scroll Holder?
« on: October 28, 2013, 07:24:37 pm »
I purchased this old brass and/or bronze & glass document or scroll holder at the TS today and after searching on the internet was not able to find one like it.

The document or scroll holder is about 9 1/2 inches in length. It has a red glass lining in it that has a round glass bottom sort of like a test tube bottom. It seems like the glass may have been hand blown into the brass or bronze case when it was made, I guess like mold blown with the case as the mold.

When I originally saw it I thought it was made to look old since the green patina was very vivid but after getting it home I'm beginning to think it may be much older than I originally thought.

If you put your finger in the glass lining there is a outward bubble where each part of the red glass shows through the metal casing.

There seems to be some kind of markings along the top rim where the lid comes off but they are hard to make out if in fact they are maker markings.

Does anyone know where and when this document or scroll holder was made or anything else about it?

Thanks!
Kevin

I think this may be more in line with what you have Kevin..dual purpose...seeing as how...Tibetan scrolls are a bit thin on the ground in the US... ;D

Thanks Bigwull, I think you may have identified where it may have come from "Tibetan scroll tube". Although, I think it's a little older than the one on the link to the amazon site with decorative stones in it but it is similar.

I,d like to think so too Kevin..yours is very nice......the more i look at yours...the more i,m inclined to believe it is for joss sticks though...what with the pointy ends....they makes sense...if you were putting joss sticks inside...but having said that...scrolls were usually wound onto a centre stick or piece of bamboo...so having the pointy ends makes sense for both applications...

The more I look at this I believe it is for a scroll...thus the dual opening ends.  Once inside they can unroll and are hard to get out at time and are easier to eject/pull out when both ends open.

Here is a different version, dual opening ends.
